Roughly 50 cars have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Cars, walls and postboxes were defaced, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they stated in a statement.
Police say they were alerted during the night on Wednesday night, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued liquid.
The liquid had been drawn in the form of a banned symbol, they added.
Officers then located multiple other marked automobiles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Police state preliminary tests indicate the liquid was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no indication as to its source; officials are not yet aware of any injuries in association with the occurrence," they added.
Local authorities stated they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the community for tips.
A high-ranking official stated the attack rendered him speechless and needed to be resolved rapidly.
"This incident hits the core of Hanau and revives the pain of the far-right terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on social media, mentioning the killing of nine people by a shooter focusing on residents of immigrant origin in February 2020.
