The Legendary Anime Ends a 27-Year Era in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of non-canon storylines. Commencing in January, after the current storyline wraps up, the anime will take a three-month break until spring, when the next major arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, the series will produce two seasons every year for a cap of 26 episodes. The studio states this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more material, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” Yet, producers end by promising “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which suggests additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime had a six-month pause that started in late 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to improve the visuals and allow the manga to build a lead to avoid a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The show couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has been able to deliver viewers with countless action sequences, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While some recap episodes sprouted up during the recent run, the benefits of this updated approach greatly outweigh the odd pause in the action. This additionally allows the original work, which is presently in the middle of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. Per the announcement, this may lead to a single installment of the anime adapting one chapter, with others instead covering more material or more to compensate for scheduling.

This concludes of a generation for anime, as the epic saga is the last big series to ditch the old-school way of creation, which prioritized airing for almost the entire year. It's the reason why classics such as Naruto, and naturally One Piece have numerous filler arcs, and the quality of the animation can vary widely between one episode and the following. Nowadays, anime production is structured in cours, with a couple at most coming out each year, allowing for better quality and more faithfulness to the original work.
