They're Applying to America What They Performed with Christianity

Trumpism's most telling and defining occasions – not its most important, nor cruelest, nor most dangerous, nor most foolish, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. Over the span of a few weeks, the US president started showing everyone his designs for a gilded ballroom two times larger than the White House and then commenced independently demolishing the East Wing to construct it.

He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of fatalities due to his slashing to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and rising, and recently a study predicted his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No former leader would have risked – really, no former commander would have conceived – unilaterally destroying major areas of the executive mansion in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the active collaboration of some of the richest Americans, nearly all of which maintain dealings with the government.

We moved from 'the humble will receive the planet' into 'the gentle will succumb from cholera'

As bewildering as it is to observe the chief executive try to upend the established notion about democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there exists a significant segment of Americans who might not perceive it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – in older age cohorts a near majority – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have observed throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we were raised with into the total contrary of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they converted a persona of affection into a symbol of hate who blesses specifically the brutality that he criticized in the Gospel; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, over decades rather than months, yet it remains unsettling via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.

A Damaging Christianity Takes Hold

Hence I shall explain the Jesus from my childhood, because theoretically the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and given that the rapidly expanding group of Americans could have minimal awareness regarding him as they consider themselves skeptics or agnostics or spiritual independents. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with different religions; however I believe that there are pearls of significant worth in biblical accounts.

It is unquestionably not the story of a powerful ruler appearing; conversely, a baby is born to displaced parents in an automotive shelter, who must quickly flee to a different country to evade covert authorities. The child matures in humble circumstances, an employed craftsman; his doctrine concerns compassion for fellow humans, specifically for the poor – and not a sentimental love, but tangible care, shown by providing food and housing. Christ's response to violence is to offer the additional cheek – not as a gesture of compliant endurance, but as a method to educate the attacker; his method regarding offenses states that when an individual takes your jacket you ought to provide him your sweater too.

The evident and straightforward reality that the Savior from scripture advocates for a form of radical love centered on the needy is what has always made the Christian faith rather a provocative belief system: attractive to the general public, but because of its natural unconventionality requiring to be controlled. In the 1950s it was restrained via weakening – Protestantism was so widespread that it essentially baptized the status quo.

A Struggle for the Highest Among Us

So I have been encouraged to observe the determined opposition against Trump arise during the previous year. It has served as significant comfort to help build the initiative that has taken to the streets via continuous gatherings, and seems to have inspired citizens to participate in large quantities in interim political contests. We shall require to continue it, and in the same spirit, featuring US banners at every demonstration and appeals to the finest aspects in US history.

We're going to be asked ... how did you receive the immigrant? Did you receive him and receive them or not?

America is best defended, in other words, by reference to the best in US heritage, similar to Christianity is best defended by relationship to what makes it unique and wonderful, specifically the model of Christ. In both situations does it mean acting as if the most negative of both America and Christian faith was nonexistent; it signifies both modesty and belief, a mixture that genuine national faithful ought to accept.
